Measurements of the Aeroacoustic Sound Source in Hot Jets
نویسنده
چکیده
We have succeeded in measuring a substantial portion of the two-point space-time velocity correlation in hot, highspeed turbulent jets. This measurement, crucial in aeroacoustic theory and the prediction of jet noise, has been sought for a long time, but has not been made due to the limitations of anemometry. Particle Image Velocimetry has reached a stage of maturity where sufficient measurement density in both time and space allow the computation of space-time correlations. This paper documents these measurements along with lower-order statistics to document the adherence of the jet rig and instrumentation to conventional measures of the turbulence of jets. These measures have been made for a simple round convergent nozzle at acoustic Mach numbers of 0.5, 0.9, both cold and at a static temperature ratio of 2.7, allowing some estimation of the changes in turbulence that take place with changes in jet temperature. Since the dataset described in this paper is very extensive, attention will be focused on validation of the rig and of the measurement systems, and on some of the interesting observations made from studying the statistics, especially as they relate to jet noise. Of note is the effort to study the acoustically relevant part of the space-time correlation by addressing that part of the turbulence kinetic energy that has sonic phase speed.

The flow around obstacles is often very complex, leading to distributed aeroacoustic sources. In experimental investigations, microphone arrays can help to separate, analyze and quantify these partial sources. In order to do so, a microphone array with a high spatial resolution and a high dynamic range is essential. In this publication, the setup and application of a microphone array for aeroac...

متن کاملMach Number Effects on Jet Noise Sources and Radiation to Shallow Angles
A LL jets have noise generation due to turbulent mixing; such mixing leads to the production of Reynolds stresses, the source term within the Lighthill acoustic analogy [1]. In addition to this source, a jet that possesses coherent, large-scale structures that travel with velocities exceeding the local speed of sound will emit Mach wave radiation, a highly efficient noise production mechanism. ...

A computational aeroacoustics prediction tool based on the application of Lighthill's theory is presented to compute noise from subsonic turbulent jets. The sources of sound are modeled by expressing Lighthill's source term as two-point correlations of the velocity fluctuations and the sound refraction effects are taken into account by a ray tracing methodology. Both the source and refraction m...
